Kate Young

Raised in Wollongong, NSW, Kate Young has spent the better part of the last 15 years doing what most musicians only threaten to do: playing live… a lot. As a fulltime covers artist and session musician, she’s clocked up thousands of gigs in pubs, clubs, weddings and festivals across Australia, as well as stints in New Zealand, the UK and the USA. Somewhere between loading gear, breaking strings and playing Mr Brightside for the 400th time, she decided it might be time to release some of her own songs.

Kate grew up on the kind of music made by women with balls; Sass Jordan, Suzi DeMarchi, Melissa Etheridge, Alanis Morissette & Sheryl Crow. That influence runs straight through her own sound: bluesy rock with a 90s heart, recorded as live as possible with great musicians and friends.

Along the way she’s shared stages with major Australian acts including Sheppard, Thirsty Merc, Snealy Sound System, Choirboys, and most recently opened for Wendy Matthews to a sold-out crowd.

Her debut single Back To You shows a softer side, but don’t get too comfortable, there are plenty of big guitars waiting in the wings with new music scheduled in the coming months.

These days Kate still gigs several nights a week, writes songs whenever they show up, and continues the noble struggle of figuring out how social media works…
